Once you have signed in, the main menu offers seven games from which to choose. There is an 'Options' area for teachers/parents to control functions and add their own word lists. The 'Shops' area is a reward for you to spend your points earned in the games by purchasing entertaining items for the Hooper family.
The Beach Game requires the user to look and listen to the word spoken, followed by the sentence. The user studies the word and then clicks the mouse cursor to make the word disappear. The user then attempts to spell the word by entering letters from the keyboard. The user has three attempts to input the correct letter, then if will be automatically displayed on the screen. Points are accumulated when the correct response is given. When a word is spelt correctly an animation is played with sound effects as a reward. The user can select either a SuperSpell or user word list; the number of words - either 5, 10, 15 or 20; and the colour of the part of the word that is to be highlighted.
In the Diving Game a number of letters in a hidden word is indicated with spaces in the top left-hand corner of the screen. The user attempts to spell the word by selecting letters from the alphabet grid displayed on the right-hand side of the screen. With each incorrect letter choice a shark moves in closer to Matt, who is diving in the sea. If nine incorrect choices are made, Matt is eaten by the shark. When a correct letter is chosen, Matt dives down and collects pieces of gold. The user receives the points shown in a bubble is the word is completed.
The aim of the game is to create three compound words from six smaller words as displayed on a colourful stand. If the compound word does not look correct the words can be interchanged using the mouse cursor. When the user is satisfied a compound word has been completed it can be tested by clicking on the boxing glove on the test-of-strength machine. If the answer is correct the glove will ring the bell and the compound word will be spoken and a point is added to the user's points tally.
The object of this game is to send Matt Hooper off fishing in his boat. Before he can go to sea, you need to find words hidden in a grid of letters. The user can choose words from either a SuperSpell
or a User word list; the number of words - either 5, 10, 15 or 20; and
the level of difficulty.
The user can choose between twenty levels of difficulty in the Pier game. Each level contains 100 words and the number of words to be presented - either 5, 10, 15 or 20. a word is written along the pier with one letter or a group of letters missing. The choices for the missing letter/s appear at the top of the screen and if selected correctly, Nancy Hooper and her dog will walk across the pier. The user will be allocated points for success. If incorrectly answered, Nancy and her dog, Bonkers, fall into the water below!
Help Sarah Hooper build a sandcastle by spelling words presented in the sand. The word will appear in the sand for a period of time selected (between 1 and 10 seconds) then a wave will wash it away. The user then types in the word. The user has three attempts to input the correct letter then it will be automatically displayed. When words are spelt correctly, Sarah builds part of the sandcastle and the user is awarded points.
At this beach scene there are two buoys floating in the ocean. One buoy has a word spelt correctly, the other, is incorrect. The user clicks on the word they consider is correct and Frank Hooper will windsurf around that buoy and back to shore and the crowd on the beach applauds. If the incorrect word is chosen, on the way back to shore Frank falls off the windsurfer and sinks into the sea. Points are awarded for correct answers. There are twenty levels of difficulty in the Windsurfing Game and each level contains 100 pairs of words. The number of pairs or words to be presented can be selected from 5, 10, 15 or 20.
Going to the Shops Once users have gained sufficient points from the games above, they can go shopping with the Hooper family at the General Store or the Surf Shop. The items are amusing and always entertaining!
