Phonics First 1 is the first program in a series of five comprehensive,
fully integrated, beginning reading programs that are carefully structured
to teach students the word attack, comprehension and spelling skills
they need to become effective readers.
In Phonics First 1 students learn the sounds for the letters
of the alphabet and, through a variety of activities, are taught to
recognize and use them in their correct position in words.
For example, if students are to acquire basic reading skills, they
must be able to locate the sounds 'b', 'a' and 't' in the word 'bat'.
The development of this ability (known as phonemic awareness) is essential
if students are to develop accurate and reliable reading skills.
The program also teaches students to recognize the relationship between
written letters and the sounds they represent, starting with the simplest
letter-sound relationships and then going on to mastery of increasingly
complex word patterns.
At this level, students are also taught simple blending techniques
to enable them to develop effective word attack skills. Assessment activities
complete the program.
Phonics First is suitable for all beginning readers and is also useful
for students in the middle primary years who are experiencing learning
difficulties and reading problems, including those who are dyslexic
or have dyscalculia short-term memory or ADD. 
It is also a suitable resource for ESL students - English as a Second
Language.
