Phonics First is a series of five comprehensive, fully integrated, beginning reading programs, carefully structured to teach students the word attack, comprehension and spelling skills they need to become effective readers.

Phonics First goes from the earliest stage of letter-sound recognition to teach,

at each successive stage, increasingly sophisticated phonics skills. At each of these stages Phonics First promotes the development of spelling and comprehension ability.

Phonics First is suitable for all beginning readers. It is also useful for students in the middle primary years who are experiencing learning difficulties and reading problems, including those who are dyslexic, have dyscalculia, short-term memory, ADD or English as a Second Language students.

The interactive nature of the instruction ensures that students remain highly motivated to master the skills taught in this carefully structured beginning reading program.

Information on Each CD in the Series:

In Phonics First 1 students learn the sounds for the letters of the alphabet and, through a variety of activities, are taught to recognize and use them in their correct position in words.

In Phonics First 2 students master basic single letter-sound relationships. They start by consolidating their knowledge of the sounds the letters make, and then go on to blend these sounds together to read simple three-sound words.

In Phonics First 3 students master common blends that come at the beginning and ending of words. For example, 'nd' as in 'wind', 'tr' as in 'truck', 'sw' as in 'swim' and so on.
Students then reinforce the acquisition of these skills by reading stories that are structured on the specific phonics skills that have been taught. [More information and pictures]

In Phonics First 4 students learn double-letter sounds (known as consonant digraphs) as well as the rules to tell them when the vowels say their long sounds.
Students also learn the rule that teaches them when the letter 'c' says 's' as in 'cent' and when the letter 'g' says 'g' as in 'gent'. [More information and pictures]

In Phonics First 5 students learn increasingly complex sounds (known as diphthongs). They also learn the vowel sounds before 'r' and how to recognize silent letters in words.

The key to the success of Phonics First is its careful construction and solid educational foundation. Students are asked to read only those words containing the sounds or rules they have been taught, and only then are they tested to demonstrate their progress.

Phonics First is an Australian made by Macroworks and is especially designed for Australian schools and students.

When students complete all 5 programs they will have attained the skills they need to cope with a wide range of reading experiences and will be well prepared to move on and develop the independent reading skills taught in the Reading Freedom series of programs.
